Coastal Ecology Course

Barrier Islands in Geogia, Emory University

In the spring of 2013, I spent my spring break with my coastal ecology class on St. Simons Island. We also went to Jekyll Island, Cumberland Island and Blackbeard Island. Dr. Leslie Real took us trekking through the marsh to explore the zonation of the coastal ecosystem and to develop our identification skills. We also conducted a few distribution studies of the vegetation, moon snails and seagulls found on the Georgia Barrier Islands. My final paper for this class was about the Ecological Effects of dredging the Savanah River. It will be interesting to follow how the dredging progresses.
