The flora on Skidaway Island are typical for all of the Georgia barrier islands. Dominated by longleaf pines, the maritime forest are home to many Live oaks, Wax myrtles, Muscadine grapes, Beauty Berry and Palms. The environmental managers and volunteer groups help in the removal of invasive species here such as Privet, and Chinese Tallow trees. The plants here are adapted to the different types of soils found here on the coastline (sandy, aerobic, muddy anaerobic, salty or inundated). The plants are well adapted like the animals to the extreme environmental conditions. In terms of landscaping, it is suggested that native, drought tolerant, deer intolerant plants are planted. Watch throughout the season as the plants morphologically change and reproduce.
